BABALAKIN & CO.’S AFFILIATE ANNOUNCES RE-LAUNCH OF NIGERIAN MONTHLY LAW REPORTS
Babalakin & CO.’s affiliate, Optimum Law Publishers Limited, announces the launch of its newly resuscitated Nigerian Monthly Law Reports (NMLR) series. Last published in 1978, the NMLR was one of the two most prominent law reports of Nigeria. The superb standard set by the series was comparable to law reports published in other common law jurisdictions like England and Canada. When publishing ceased for the NMLR, not a few users were disappointed.
Now, thanks to the dedicated staff of Babalakin & CO. and Optimum Law Publishers’, the re-launch of the NMLR series is poised to redefine Nigerian legal reporting and bring back the standards of excellence that the NMLR once stood for.
According to Dr. B.O. Babalakin SAN, the Editor-In-Chief of the NMLR in his editorial note to the maiden edition of the new series, “The NMLR is being resuscitated at a very critical time in the development of the law of Nigeria. It is designed to report the law accurately, emphasising the real decision of the court. In recent times, many law reports have tended to present all the findings of the court as the decision of the court. This practice confuses practitioners, students and even judicial officers, thus hampering the development of the law. It has also become very noticeable that there are many decisions of the various courts in Nigeria that are inconsistent. It is our belief that this situation could have been averted with proper law reporting. We intend to highlight these discrepancies for the guidance of all the stakeholders in the development of law.”
The Public Presentation of the New Series of the Nigerian Monthly Law Report is scheduled for 13th May, 2010 at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos. The unveiling of the law report will be conducted by His Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN the Executive Governor of Lagos State. Prof. Fidelis Oditah, QC, SAN will be the guest speaker at the event while the chairman will be the Hon. Justice Mustapha Adebayo Akanbi CFR, Former President of the Court of Appeal. The report covers the judgements of superior courts of record, both of first instance and appellate courts, in Nigeria and it is available once a month at the price of N 4,000.
